I think a lot of the negative reaction to Zohran re the Nurses shows a lack of maturity in understanding this moment of growth in DSA and the Left.
I especially liked that our main fight is with the right wing and not the liberal resistance. I don’t r think this understanding is shared broadly enough within DSA, which leaves us unprepared for this moment.
We (DSA and the left) need to mature in a hurry.
Eric — you know more about what’s going on in DSA. This is my own personal reaction.
I love this conversation and your Substack, and I’m gonna sound like a real dickhead for saying this and maybe I am. But the sound of everyone’s voice on this podcast is a problem. The vocal fry. The flat awkward LA young hip voice. Everyone hates that voice. I’m so sorry, I love your writing but it’s true. Especially working class people who - I’m calling it - mostly do not sound like that. Most especially in New York. I get it, I’m being that guy. I’m sorry. But I’m convinced I’m right. A whole generation of New York leftists Californiacated their voices and it’s a damn shame and it just sounds sooo privileged.
I view myself as left of center and I hate bigotry. And when I hear people say AIPAC funds Chuck Shumer, etc., what I hear is “we are looking for an external scapegoat for American plutocrats so let’s pick a golden oldy The Christian Knows.” This is a phrase used by racists which is an antisemitic conspiracy theory and trope describing the idea of a Jewish cabal of world manipulators. Recently, the government of Iran, a theocratic autocracy, killed 7,000 student protestors without a peep from the liberal left. The Middle East ( including Israel) does not pull the strings of the USA, the USA is a puppeteer to the rest of the world and funds many middle east countries, including Israel. There’s no great Muslim cabal. There is no great Jewish cabal controlling events around the world; and unless liberals would like to sew together a coalition of racial bigots found within Republican, Democratic and Independent voters, to create some Frankenstein monster that might win an election in the U.S. in the future, they have to address how anti-semitism with both conservatives and liberals can serve to fracture any earned power they might amass. People need to learn how to coexist.
This exchange really resonated with me.
