Thanks Eric - I agree with your analyisis. This was a particularly poor time to cave, when over 20 Million working class Americans face skyrocketing health costs which they are just now learning about., and affluent Americans would soon see major disruption of air travel.
If Dems, unions, and progressives had their act together, they would have sent organizers to states with repug Senators to organize mass pressure to fully fund health and food benefits for working families. But going forward, the repugs now face a Hobson's choice of voting to restore ACA funding and giving Ds a win, or voting against and losing a landslide in 2026.
No let’s be real clear here: those are not “skyrocketing costs”. This is just extra money Biden gave away to the health insurance companies going away. Those double digit increases in your premiums, that is the stuff the Democrats set in the ACA, that is the “affordable” care they make sure you have “access” to.
Working class people and their costs didn’t factor into this one bit
It is the job of labor unions to represent their members, not stiffen the spines of and support the democrats. Their members were suffering so the Dems could give more money to health insurance companies.
Excellent post, I’m personally tired of unions being the third wing of the Democratic Party. Unions should be developing their own independent political platform and not be reliant on one party. It’s very clear that the Democrats are not interested in supporting labor.
